Delivery Attempt Process

USPS will attempt to deliver the certified letter to the recipient’s address.

If no one is available to sign for the letter, the delivery cannot be completed at that time.

USPS Notice Left for Recipient

  • The mail carrier will leave a notice (PS Form 3849) at the address if the letter cannot be delivered.
  • This notice informs the recipient that a delivery attempt was made and that a certified letter is being held.

Redelivery and Pickup Options

The notice provides the recipient with information on how to:

  • Schedule a redelivery or,
  • Pick up the letter at their local post office

The letter will be held at the post office for 15 days before being returned to the sender.

You can also attempt to schedule redelivery on the USPS website if it is available. Click here for more.
